Sports Injury Treatment in Chennai

KS Ortho Clinic in Madipakkam, Chennai treats sports injuries such as ankle sprains, ACL and meniscus tears, tennis elbow, shoulder dislocations and muscle strains. Care is led by orthopaedic surgeon Prof. Dr. A. N. Sarath Babu, starts with a clinical exam and imaging where needed, and uses an in-house physiotherapy unit to get you back to play safely.

What is a sports injury?

A sports injury is damage to a bone, joint, ligament, tendon or muscle caused by playing sport or exercising. Injuries are either acute (sudden — a twisted ankle, a fall, a tackle) or overuse (built up over weeks of repetitive strain — tennis elbow, shin splints, tendinitis). Both respond best to early, accurate diagnosis.

In Chennai we see them most from cricket, football, badminton, running, gym training and weekend games played after a long week at a desk.

When should you see a doctor for a sports injury?

See an orthopaedic doctor promptly if you have any of these:

  • You heard a pop or crack at the time of injury
  • You cannot put weight on the leg, or the joint feels unstable or gives way
  • Swelling appears quickly (within a few hours)
  • The joint looks deformed, or you cannot move it
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in the limb
  • Pain that has not improved after 1–2 weeks of rest

Suspected fractures and dislocations need same-day care. For emergencies, call +91 94442 57027.

What to do in the first 48 hours

  1. Protect the injured part — stop playing; don’t “run it off”.
  2. Rest it, and use support (a crepe bandage or sling) if needed.
  3. Ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, wrapped in a cloth, every 2–3 hours.
  4. Compress gently with a bandage to control swelling.
  5. Elevate the limb above heart level when lying down.
  6. Avoid heat, massage and alcohol for the first two days, as they can increase swelling.

This is first aid, not treatment. If any warning sign above applies, get examined.

How we diagnose sports injuries

  1. Detailed history — how the injury happened, your sport, position and training load.
  2. Clinical examination — specific ligament, tendon and stability tests for the joint involved.
  3. Imaging when needed — X-ray for bone injury; MRI for ligaments, cartilage and tendons; ultrasound for some tendon and muscle injuries.
  4. Grading the injury — so the plan matches the damage, from a mild strain to a complete tear.

Sports injury treatment at KS Ortho Clinic

Most sports injuries heal without surgery. We start with the least invasive option that will work and step up only if needed.

Non-surgical treatment

  • Pain and inflammation control with medicines and cold therapy
  • Bracing, strapping or splinting to protect the healing tissue
  • Structured physiotherapy in our in-house unit: mobility, strengthening, balance and sport-specific drills
  • Injections in selected cases, after examination
  • Correcting training errors, footwear and technique

Surgical treatment, when needed

  • Arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery for ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair and shoulder stabilisation — smaller cuts, less blood loss and quicker early recovery than open surgery
  • Fracture fixation for displaced or unstable fractures
  • Tendon repair for complete ruptures

Recovery and return to sport

Recovery time depends on the injury and its grade. As a general guide:

Injury

Usual recovery range

Mild ankle sprain (grade 1)

1–3 weeks

Moderate muscle strain

3–6 weeks

Stress fracture

6–12 weeks

ACL reconstruction

6–9 months to return to sport

Your own timeline is set after examination. We clear you to return only when strength, range of motion and balance are back — returning early is the commonest cause of re-injury.

Preventing sports injuries

  • Warm up for 10 minutes and include dynamic stretches
  • Increase training load gradually — roughly 10% a week
  • Strengthen hips, core and the muscles around your knees and shoulders
  • Use sport-appropriate footwear and replace worn shoes
  • Hydrate well — Chennai’s heat and humidity raise cramp and fatigue risk
  • Rest between hard sessions and don’t play through sharp pain

  • I went to KS ortho clinic as my left middle finger got stuck in door hinge when the door was closed fast and got my finger crushed. A skin broke open on either side of the finger nail and the nail has distanced itself from the skin underneath. The x-ray revealed a small fracture as well. Dr. Sarath Babu handled the diagnosis, did stitches on 3 sides of the nail and now, my nail is all good after a month and no sign of injury on the nail, thanks to the way it was handled.

faq's

Do I need an MRI for a sports injury?

Not always. Many sprains and strains are diagnosed by examination alone. An MRI is advised when a ligament, cartilage or tendon tear is suspected, or when pain doesn’t settle with treatment.

Should I see an orthopaedic doctor or a physiotherapist first?

For a fresh injury with swelling, instability or suspected fracture, see an orthopaedic doctor first to rule out a tear or break. Physiotherapy then forms the core of recovery. At KS Ortho, both are available in one place.

Can a torn ligament heal without surgery?

Partial ligament tears and most ankle sprains heal with bracing and physiotherapy. A complete ACL tear usually doesn’t heal on its own; surgery is often recommended for people who want to return to pivoting sports.

Is ice or heat better for a sports injury?

Ice in the first 48 hours to limit swelling. Gentle heat may help later for stiffness, but not on a fresh, swollen injury.

How long after a sprain can I play again?

Mild sprains usually allow a return in 1–3 weeks; moderate to severe sprains can take 6 weeks or more. Return only when you can hop, cut and sprint without pain.

Do you treat sports injuries in children and teenagers?

Yes. Growing bones have growth plates that can be injured differently from adult bones, so young athletes should be examined rather than told to play through pain.

What are the clinic timings?

Monday to Saturday, 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm; Sunday, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. For emergencies, call +91 94442 57027.
