WHAT IS HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY?

Hip replacement surgery, also known as hip arthroplasty, is a procedure to replace a damaged or worn-out hip joint with an artificial implant. The primary goal of this surgery is to relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance the quality of life for individuals with severe hip joint problems.

Total Hip Replacement

Involves removing the damaged ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) of the hip joint and replacing them with artificial components. The prosthetic ball is attached to the top of the thigh bone (femur), and the socket is placed into the hip bone (pelvis).

Partial Hip Replacement

Also known as hemiarthroplasty, this involves replacing only the ball part of the hip joint while leaving the socket intact. This is often used for certain types of hip fractures.

Hip Resurfacing

This is a less invasive alternative to total hip replacement where the damaged surface of the femoral head is replaced with a metal cap. The socket is also resurfaced with a metal lining. This option is typically used for younger, more active patients.

In general, Hip replacement is considered when pain and functional limitations significantly impact daily life and when non-surgical treatments like medications, physical therapy, or injections have not provided sufficient relief. It’s important to have a thorough discussion with an orthopedic specialist to evaluate the potential benefits and risks of the surgery based on your specific condition and overall health

WHEN DO YOU NEED HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY?

Hip replacement surgery is typically recommended for individuals with:
1) Osteoarthritis
Wear and tear of the hip joint cartilage that leads to pain and stiffness.
An autoimmune condition that causes joint inflammation and damage.
Severe fractures that don’t heal properly with other treatments.
Death of the bone tissue due to loss of blood supply, which can lead to joint collapse and pain.
Arthritis that develops after a hip injury or trauma

  • I went to KS ortho clinic as my left middle finger got stuck in door hinge when the door was closed fast and got my finger crushed. A skin broke open on either side of the finger nail and the nail has distanced itself from the skin underneath. The x-ray revealed a small fracture as well. Dr. Sarath Babu handled the diagnosis, did stitches on 3 sides of the nail and now, my nail is all good after a month and no sign of injury on the nail, thanks to the way it was handled.

What does a hip replacement X-ray look like before and after surgery?

A hip replacement X-ray before surgery usually shows joint space narrowing, bone damage, or severe arthritis. After surgery, the X-ray clearly shows the artificial hip joint (implant) properly aligned in place. Comparing before-and-after X-rays helps doctors and patients understand how the damaged joint has been restored.

How much does hip replacement surgery cost in India?

Hip replacement cost in India generally ranges from ₹2,00,000 to ₹5,00,000, depending on the hospital, implant type, surgeon’s expertise, and city. Government and multi-specialty hospitals may offer more affordable packages, while premium implants and advanced techniques can increase the cost.

What is the difference between hip replacement and hip resurfacing?

Hip replacement involves removing the damaged hip joint and replacing it with an artificial implant. Hip resurfacing preserves more of the natural bone and is usually recommended for younger, active patients. The choice depends on age, bone quality, activity level, and severity of joint damage.

Is hip replacement safe for patients with heart problems?

Yes, hip replacement can be safely performed in patients with heart problems, provided there is proper pre-surgical evaluation. Cardiologists and anesthetists assess heart function and manage risks before surgery. With careful planning, many patients with cardiac conditions successfully undergo hip replacement.

Is hip replacement surgery painful and can it be avoided?

Hip replacement surgery is performed under anesthesia, so pain during the procedure is not felt. Post-surgery pain is usually manageable with medications and physiotherapy. In early stages, hip replacement can sometimes be avoided through weight management, physiotherapy, injections, and lifestyle changes. However, in advanced arthritis, surgery may be the most effective long-term solution.
