Why Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is used for several key reasons:

  1. Diagnosis: It allows for direct visualization of the inside of a joint, which can help in diagnosing conditions that might not be visible on X-rays or MRIs.
  2. Minimally Invasive: Compared to open surgery, arthroscopy involves smaller incisions, which typically results in less pain, reduced risk of infection, and quicker recovery times.
  3. Treatment: In addition to diagnosing issues, arthroscopy can also be used to treat various joint problems. Surgeons can repair or remove damaged tissues, such as torn cartilage or ligaments, using specialized instruments.
  4. Faster Recovery: Because it’s less invasive, patients generally experience less trauma to the surrounding tissues, leading to a faster return to normal activities.
  5. Reduced Scarring: The smaller incisions used in arthroscopy generally result in less scarring compared to traditional open surgery.
  6. Outpatient Procedure: Many arthroscopic procedures can be done on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can go home the same day as the surgery, rather than staying overnight in the hospital.

WHEN DO YOU NEED SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION?

Consulting with a healthcare provider, such as an orthopaedic specialist or a spine specialist, is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and to develop an appropriate treatment plan based on individual needs.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Arthroscopic treatment options vary depending on the specific joint issue being addressed. Here are some common treatments performed using arthroscopy:

Meniscus Repair

For tears in the meniscus (the cartilage in the knee), arthroscopy can be used to either repair the tear or, if repair isn’t feasible, remove the damaged part.

In cases of torn ligaments, such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee, arthroscopy can assist in reconstructing the ligament using grafts.

For damaged cartilage, arthroscopy can be used to trim or remove loose or frayed cartilage to relieve pain and improve joint function.

This procedure involves the removal of inflamed or diseased synovial tissue (the lining of the joint) to reduce pain and swelling, often used in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthroscopy can remove loose fragments of bone or cartilage that may be causing pain or interfering with joint movement.

This involves flushing the joint with a sterile fluid to remove debris, such as inflamed tissue or small fragments of cartilage, which can help reduce pain and swelling.
If a Baker’s cyst (a fluid-filled sac behind the knee) is causing symptoms, arthroscopy can help in draining or removing it.
For conditions like frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), arthroscopy can help release tight capsule tissue to improve range of motion.
In the shoulder or hip, arthroscopy can repair or reconstruct a torn labrum (the cartilage that lines and cushions the joint).

In the shoulder, arthroscopy can be used to repair torn rotator cuff tendons.

The specific treatment approach will depend on the type and extent of the joint problem, as well as the overall health and activity level of the patient. The goal of arthroscopic treatment is to relieve symptoms, restore function, and improve quality of life with as little disruption to surrounding tissues as possible.

faq's

1. What is arthroscopy and what is it used for?

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat joint problems. It is commonly performed on the knee and shoulder joints to treat ligament injuries, cartilage damage, meniscus tears, frozen shoulder, and sports injuries. Arthroscopy allows faster recovery with smaller incisions compared to open surgery.

2. How is knee or shoulder arthroscopy done?

Arthroscopy is performed in a hospital or specialized arthroscopy clinic using a small camera called an arthroscope. The surgeon makes tiny incisions near the joint, inserts the camera, and uses precision instruments to repair or clean damaged tissues. In some cases, arthroscopy is done without surgical repair, purely for diagnosis or joint cleaning.

3. Is arthroscopy painful and how long does recovery take?

Arthroscopy is usually not very painful as it is done under anesthesia. Mild pain and swelling may occur after the procedure, which is manageable with medication and physiotherapy. Most patients can walk within a few hours or the next day, depending on the joint and procedure type.

4. How long after arthroscopy can I walk or drive?

Most patients can walk with support within 24–48 hours after arthroscopy. Driving is usually safe after 1–2 weeks, once pain reduces and joint movement improves. Recovery time may vary based on whether arthroscopy involved repair and how well physiotherapy is followed.

5. How much does knee or shoulder arthroscopy cost in India and where can I find the best doctors near me?

The cost of knee or shoulder arthroscopy in major Indian cities typically ranges from ₹60,000 to ₹2,00,000, depending on the hospital, surgeon expertise, and procedure complexity. To find the best arthroscopy clinics or doctors near you, look for orthopedic specialists with strong patient reviews, advanced surgical facilities, and post-surgery rehabilitation support.
